Knox Box for Your Home
Don’t Wait for an Emergency—Be Prepared.
The Knox Box HomeBox is a powerful tool in protecting what matters most. When seconds count, give firefighters the ability to respond quickly and safely—without damaging your property.
During an emergency, every moment is critical, especially when it concerns your home and your loved ones. The Knox Box HomeBox is designed to provide firefighters with quick access to your home without having to force entry and cause damage. The HomeBox is a small, secure key lockbox that is mounted on or near your front door, providing firefighters with the key to your front door.
What is a Knox Box HomeBox?
The Knox Box HomeBox is a heavy-duty, tamper-resistant lockbox specifically designed to store a key to your home. It’s only a little bit over four inches tall and can hang on your front door without causing any damage to the door. It allows authorized fire department personnel to gain access without breaking doors or windows in the event of a fire, medical emergency, or welfare check. Unlike generic lockboxes sold at hardware stores, the HomeBox is part of the KnoxBox system, a trusted, nationwide system used by thousands of fire departments, including Front Range Fire Rescue.
One of the most important questions homeowners ask is, “How secure is this box?” The answer: Extremely secure. This is not your average real estate key lockbox; this is public safety-grade protection.
- The HomeBox is made from reinforced steel and built to resist prying, drilling, and forced entry.
- It’s only accessible using a department-controlled master key, secured by strict fire department protocols and procedures.
- The master key itself is digitally tracked, audited, and stored in secure electronic key retention devices, ensuring only authorized personnel have access and only when needed.

What happens to the HomeBox when I no longer need it?
The unique key security of the HomeBox means that it can only be used in FRFR’s jurisdiction. So, once you no longer need it at your home, simply return it to FRFR and we will rotate it back into the system.
If you’re simply moving to a different home in our jurisdiction, please contact us so we can remove the old key and replace it with the correct key.
How do I get a Knox Box HomeBox?
Thanks to the support of the FRFR Foundation, local residents can now request the HomeBox for their homes within the FRFR jurisdiction. Each HomeBox costs approximately $250, and the FRFR Foundation has a few options to help residents afford one. If you cannot afford the up-front cost, you can work with the FRFR Foundation to repay the cost over 12 months, bringing the cost down to roughly $20 per month. Thanks to gracious donations from several businesses and citizens in our area, the FRFR Foundation was able to purchase several of these HomeBoxes to kick-start the program. Low income residents can also apply for consideration of asking for the HomeBox to be donated by the FRFR Foundation.

When you enroll in the FRFR Knox HomeBox program:
- FRFR members will contact you to verify your desired installation option.
- FRFR members will mount the box according to your wishes.
- You place a spare key inside the box, and we will lock the key inside the box, along with an emergency contact card.
- FRFR members will provide you with a File of Life that you can attach to the refrigerator to share important medical information we may need to know in an emergency.
- Only FRFR firefighters have access via the master key in the event of an emergency.
This saves precious time when responding to medical calls, fire alarms, or welfare concerns. No more broken doors, forced entry, or long delays while waiting for family or a locksmith.
Whether you’re an older adult living alone, a frequent traveler, or simply seeking enhanced preparedness for piece of mind, the HomeBox represents a very wise investment.
- Are you concerned about your elderly parents? Place a box on their home for rapid medical access.
- Are you away on vacation? Ensure responders can check on your property if neighbors report concerns.
- Do you or a loved one live alone? Ensure access if you’re ever incapacitated.
For a one-time cost, you get 24/7 peace of mind, a small price for protection and rapid emergency response.
